Blood Sugar Mastery Part 1: Intro to Devices

How to Track Your Blood Sugar: A Key Practice for Aging Well

Carol Tuttle explains how to use devices to track blood sugar

n this video, we’re diving into a vital topic that can transform your health journey and enhance your empowered aging experience—blood sugar mastery. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is not just for people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, it is one of the most impactful things you can do for your overall health as you age. Let’s get into why it matters and how you can monitor blood sugar. Start taking control of your blood sugar levels today.

What’s Your Blood Sugar Telling You?

Have you ever tested your blood sugar? Do you know your fasting blood sugar level, or what your blood sugar looks like when you first wake up in the morning? These are crucial numbers to know, as they provide insight into your metabolic health and energy levels.

What Are Healthy Blood Sugar Levels?

Understanding healthy ranges is the first step. Ideally, your fasting blood sugar (after you’ve not eaten for at least 8 hours) should be between 70 and 100 mg/dL. When you check your levels two hours after a meal, they should ideally stay under 140 mg/dL. Staying within these ranges helps prevent insulin spikes, which can lead to insulin resistance, cell damage, and even Type 2 diabetes over time. Keeping your blood sugar stable is all about preventing these issues and protecting your body’s cellular health for the long term.

How to Monitor Your Blood Sugar Levels

You can use two primary tools to monitor your blood sugar levels: finger poke glucose testing kits and Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). Both offer valuable information but work differently to give you insights into your glucose levels.

To see a demonstration of both devices and how they work, watch the video linked above. I walk you through the benefits of each tool and show you how easy it is to use them!

Why Blood Sugar Regulation is Essential for Aging Well

Keeping your blood sugar levels stable isn’t just about avoiding diabetes; it’s about protecting your cells and your energy levels. When your glucose stays balanced, your body produces just the right amount of insulin, keeping your cells functioning well and your energy steady throughout the day. This balance supports an active, engaged lifestyle, which is crucial for aging well. By understanding how your body reacts to different foods and activities, you can make empowered choices that support your health and well-being.

How to Access CGMs Without a Prescription

If you’re interested in using a CGM, the good news is that you don’t need a prescription! Several online services make these tools accessible so you can begin monitoring your blood sugar right away. This makes it easier than ever to take charge of your health and gather the information you need to make empowered, data-driven choices for your body.

I’ve partnered with Nutrisense to make this even easier for you to access. Learn more about them here and use code CAROLTUTTLE for $50 off.

My Experience

I’ve been using a CGM for nearly three years, and it has truly transformed my health journey. With the CGM, I’ve discovered that my blood sugar spikes up to 160 mg/dL when I eat just a handful of grapes, pineapple, rice, or sweet potatoes. This information has empowered me to make dietary changes, removing these foods to maintain stable blood sugar levels. What’s fascinating is that my husband’s body reacts differently—his levels remain stable even with these foods, highlighting how our bodies are unique, and our dietary needs must be personalized.

The Bottom Line

Regulating your blood sugar is key to empowered aging. Whether you use a finger poke kit for quick checks or a CGM for continuous monitoring, understanding your body’s glucose levels allows you to make informed decisions that can positively impact your health. Monitoring your blood sugar can prevent energy crashes, protect your cellular health, and help you avoid long-term health issues before they start.
